What 'lifetime free' actually means

A lifetime free (LTF) credit card has no joining fee and no annual fee — ever — regardless of how much or how little you spend. This is different from "first-year free" or "spend-based waiver" cards, where you pay ₹500–₹2,500 + GST every renewal if you don't hit a minimum spend (typically ₹2–4 lakh a year).

Other charges still apply under RBI rules: 18% GST on services and finance charges, 3.5% forex markup on international spends, ~2.5% cash withdrawal fee, late payment fees of ₹400–₹1,300, and ~3.5% per month interest on revolved balances. "Lifetime free" only refers to the recurring annual fee.

Why a lifetime free card is the smartest first card

  • No cost to keep open forever. Older accounts lift your CIBIL score by improving credit age — so a kept-open LTF card pays dividends for years.
  • Risk-free reward stacking. Pair an LTF cashback card with a co-branded e-commerce card and earn on every category without paying fees.
  • Beginner-friendly underwriting. Most LTF cards approve from CIBIL 700+ and income from ₹20,000/month.
  • Easy to "set and forget." Park one recurring bill on auto-pay (Netflix, broadband) so the card stays active.

Lifetime free traps to avoid

Several cards marketed as "free" are actually "first year free" — the fee kicks in from year 2 unless you hit a spend threshold. Always confirm by asking the issuer for the Most Important Terms & Conditions (MITC) document and checking the "Joining Fee" and "Renewal Fee" lines explicitly. If either says ₹0 with no asterisk, it's truly LTF.

Also watch for cards that are LTF on the base variant but charge for "instant access to higher tier" — a sales tactic some banks use mid-call.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There are no joining or annual fees ever. Standard charges like GST on services, late payment fees, forex markup and finance charges on revolving balances still apply on usage.
